Top Tips for Ramping Up Your Work Year in 2020

Monday January 20, 2020

January – the month after the packed holiday season where everyone feels a little tired, confused, and unsure of where their year is heading.  But the first month of the year doesn’t have to be a complete write off, and is a brilliant time to ramp up for the year ahead before getting bogged down in endless tasks and projects.

Here are our top 5 tips for using January to prep for the year to come, inspired by Entrepreneur.com.

Create a Vision Board

Take the time while work is still (relatively) quite to reflect on the year past and plan for the year to come.  Think about your career trajectory and set one or two big goals you would like to accomplish, and use these as the focus of your vision board.

Use the vision board to set goals for each month, quarter, and the year as a whole, and lay out weekly and monthly action steps as you go to help you realise your full potential!  The Huffpost has a great article on how to set up vision boards and the reason why they work so well!

Tidy Up

Desk looking a bit of a mess?  Still using your 2019 planner? Finding invoices that have been paid but are still floating around, cluttering up your space?  You need to clear out and spruce up your work space! Take the opportunity to order new office furniture, buy accessories for your desk, pack away last year’s files, and make space for new ones.  This applies to your physical and digital work space.

According to Simply Placed, “employee productivity levels were “highly influenced” by the cleanliness of their workplace”.  Find out more on their website.

Get Organised

Following from the above topic, use this time to get yourself organised.  Productivity will be boosted and stress reduced if you implement a good organisation system, and delegate tasks effectively.  This will give you the time you need to work on strategically critical elements.

Here are some ideas from Nimble to get you started!  We love Trello, but each organisational system has its benefits.

Set a Theme

How often have you made New Year’s resolutions only to break or forget them as soon as February rolls around?  Instead of setting resolutions, try to set a theme to live your year around. This should be summed up in one word and can apply to all areas of your life.  Some ideas include mindfulness, flexibility, simplify, adventure, bravery, boldness, etc.

Sound a little bit strange?  No worries – Psychology Today has a great article detailing how to get started, if this is a strategy you want to pursue.

Get out from Behind your Computer

Technology has made our lives and communications quicker and easier, but we should not forget about the benefits of face-to-face meetings.  Studies show that face-to-face meetings with colleagues and clients alike can help to foster relationships and make you more productive. If you work in an international environment like we do, face-to-face contact can and should include video calling your remote working colleagues.

Some of the scientifically based benefits of face-to-face communication have been outlined by Ashton College.
