Potassium feldspar, in addition to quartz, was mined and sold into the pottery and porcelain markets in Norway and abroad. Quartz from this mine was only sporadically used, and sold in lumps to ferrosilicon smelters in Meråker and Kristiansand in Norway.
The Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) initiated exploration of quartz in Drag, which marked the beginning of quartz mining in Drag.
Drag shifts focus to quartz production.
Elkem and Norcem open a processing plant in Drag, naming the JV Minnor.
Minnor failed to produce the quality of quartz planned and could not acquire sufficient customers. The company suffers bankruptcy after only 10 months of operation.
Minnorco, owned by the German company Metall Gesellschaft AG, takes over the operation of Minnor. The quartz deposit continues to be mined, and is sold with more success.
Norwegian Crystallites AS is formed in Drag by parent company Norsk Mineral AS and begins production of high purity quartz for use in high end technical applications. The success of this venture is attributed to Norsk Mineral’s 60 years of mining experience.
